Bruce James Merkel, 92, passed away peacefully on June 27th in Painted Post, NY at Brookdale Senior Living with his wife Constance Merkel by his side. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved “Moose”. He will always be known for his welcoming, good natured and positive attitude.. He treated everyone with respect and caring with the spiritual guidance of “Let your conscience be your guide” which will live on in our hearts.
Bruce was born on 12/05/1932 in Rochester, NY, he was the son of Ruth and Earle Merkel, one of 12, 9 predeceasing him (Earlene, Guy, Tom, Wanda, Gail, Lee, Una, Nancy and Dennis) and 2 surviving siblings Jerry and Ann. He was extremely proud to be part of a large family of 12, He shared proudly to everyone he met.
He is survived by his lovely wife of 42 years Constance Lynne, 4 children Wendy Harrison, David Spina (Carmen), Erik Merkel (Jenna) and Jody Palmiere; 10 grandchildren, Brent and Kyle (Wendy); Ryan, Natasha and Joshua (David) Cameron, Reese and McKenna (Erik); Michael and Alissa (Jody).
Bruce attended St. Thomas Aquinas high school in Rochester, where he had a passion for sports. In 1952, he proudly joined the US Marine Corps, attaining the rank of Sergeant.
Bruce married Constance in 1983 at St. Mary’s church in Canandaigua where they lived and were active parishioners, as he was a God loving man. He loved to spend time with family and friends fishing, hunting, skiing, playing softball, and coaching youth baseball. His profession was a commercial painter for IUPAT Local 150 up until his retirement. He lived in Atlanta, Georgia for 20+ years with Erik and Jenna’s family.
Service Details: A funeral service with Military honors will be held on Thursday July 24th (11 am) at St. Mary’s Church in Canandaigua, NY.
