Freal E. Ames

August 17, 1932 — May 28, 2015

Freal Erne Ames, age 82 of Bath, NY, passed away on Thursday, May 28th at the Buffalo VA after a valiant battle fighting the scourge of the asbestos cancer, mesothelioma.
Freal was born in Prattsburgh, NY on August 17th, 1932, the son of Elizabeth (Reinhardt) and Freal R. Ames. Thus began the life of a selfless man who enjoyed doing for others above all else, and as such he will be dearly missed by all he touched.
Freal graduated from Haverling High in 1950 and went on to serve in the United States Navy from 1950 to 1953 during the Korean War.
He was an integral member of The Bath American Legion for over 50 years as well as a proud member of The Elks, BPOE 1547. In addition, he was a charter member of The Bath Ambulance Corps. He also enjoyed contributing his time and efforts to The Steuben County Historical Society and dedicated many hours maintaining the Marble fountain that graces the former Magee estate that is now home to the Historical Society. He also donated his time and effort maintaining the grounds of The Bath Centenary Methodist Church where he faithfully attended weekly services
He enjoyed life's simple pleasures. He loved cooking, fishing on Keuka Lake, caring for his "four legged buddy," Muffy, and cheering on the "Bills". He was an avid NASCAR fan and always looked forward to our annual trek to "The Glen," where he was always head of tailgating.
He is survived by two children: Valerie (Dan) Dugo and Timothy Ames along with two stepchildren, Wes (Terry) Dale and Patrick Dale. In addition, his five sisters: Dorothy Pomeroy, Marjorie (George) Walike, Beverly Walike, Carole Cody, and Dianne (Tony) Lamonica, also his brother and "fishing buddy" Robert (Pat) Ames. In addition survivors include four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held for friends and family at Grove Cemetery followed by a celebration of his life at the American Legion on a date to be determined.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Steuben Historical Society.
