Joan Marie Hough, née., Thompson, 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Las Vegas, NV surrounded by family after a long, courageous and resilient battle with weakness and dementia on September 29th, 2025. Joan is the daughter of David Sr. and Jessie (Payne) Thompson and was born alongside her beloved identical twin sister, Joanne Smailt, on February 4th, 1941, in Prattsburgh, NY. Joan married William (Bill) Orr Hough., on January 20th, 1959. They had three children together, Joshua Hough, Joesph Hough, and Wendy Sue Hough (Cowell). Joan's work career started at Westinghouse in Bath, NY. Then she moved on to Steuben Foods in Prattsburgh, NY for many years. Joan then finished her working career at Phillips (formally known as Westinghouse) in Bath, NY. After she retired, Joan moved to Rochester, NY where she and Bill enjoyed retirement until he became ill and passed on September 29th, 2006. Joan then moved with her daughter to Las Vegas, NV where she spent the remainder of her years. Joan is predeceased by her parents, her husband William Hough, and her siblings Shirley (Clifford) Ribble, twin sister Joanne (Harold) Smalt, Linda (Richard) Swarts, Lester (Natalie) Thompson, Geraldine (Jack) Gordon, Kathy (Ronald) Davis, William Thompson, and sister-in-law Dorothy Thompson.
Joan is survived by her brother David Thompson Jr., sisters-in-law Naomi Thompson and Elaine Thompson. Her sons Joshua (Robyn) Hough, Joesph Hough, and daughter Wendy (Edward) Cowell. Her grandchildren; William (Brenda) Hough, Amanda (Rob) Fisher, Rachel (Ryan) Feeley, Torie (Jesse) Thompson, Zachary (Kaitlyn) Cowell and Isaac Hough. As well as several great-grandchildren. Joan led a long life of fun and hobbies as well as teaching others those hobbies. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilting, and jig-saw puzzles. Joan was an avid card player of euchre, canasta, and poker. In her later years could be heard at home playing Yahtzee over the phone with her twin sister. She also enjoyed traveling to casinos, playing bingo, and slot machines.
To celebrate her life, the family will welcome friends on Saturday, October 11th at First Presbyterian Church in Prattsburgh, NY with calling hours from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Service immediately following at 12:00 p.m. and then graveside service at Prattsburgh Rural Cemetery. Celebration of life will be held at First Presbyterian Church immediately after.
