John Cooper Bryson Jr.

Apr 2, 1934 — Jun 16, 2026

John Cooper Bryson Jr., affectionately known as John to his many friends and loved ones, is a beacon of inspiration and a testament to the power of dedication, hard work, and community spirit. Born in the historic town of Bath, John's journey began in the embrace of the Bryson Hotel during the memorable flood of 1934, marking the start of a life that would leave a lasting impact on everyone he touched.

John's formative years were spent within the walls of the quaint two-room Kanona Schoolhouse in Kanona, NY, where he first learned the value of education and community. His academic path led him through the schools of Avoca, Prattsburgh, and Bath, NY, instilling in him a lifelong love for learning and personal growth. John's early experiences on his family's farm in Kanona, especially at the Pea Vinery, were filled with joy and the simple pleasures of rural life. His passion for sports was evident as he played basketball at the Kanona Methodist Church, where his team placed second in the annual tournament, a proud moment that stayed with him throughout his life.

The spirit of competition and camaraderie followed John onto the football field at Haverling High School. He was a key player in the legendary 1953 Wild Pig Game, a friendly but fierce clash with the Bath PD, and the triumphant final game against Painted Post, which brought The Jug home. This period of triumph was beautifully capped by his marriage to Martha Lewis the following day, November 15, 1952, marking the beginning of a loving partnership.

John's professional life was as diverse as it was impactful. After some years at Westinghouse in Bath, where he was recognized as a natural leader among his coworkers, he ventured into entrepreneurship. With the support of his wife and family, he owned and operated Box Electric Company in the village of Bath, illuminating the lives of those around him. His entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there; he cherished his time and involvement at the Old National Hotel, the Tally-Ho Restaurant, the Kanona Post Office, and D.J.'s Flamingo, leaving a legacy of service and hospitality that enriched the community.

Elected as the Mayor of Bath in 1973, John served with distinction until 1982, a period marked by transformative achievements that continue to benefit the village today. His vision and commitment led to the development of senior housing projects that stand as a testament to his foresight and compassion for the elderly. John was instrumental in securing the land for the Clyde F. Simon Lakeview Apartments and played a pivotal role in the construction of Spring Meadow Apartments. His efforts to enhance the Steuben County Jail showcased his dedication to improving the community's infrastructure.

Perhaps one of John's most endearing legacies is the renovation of the Pioneer Cemetery in the Village of Bath, which he and his wife organized and accomplished in 1993. This project was a labor of love that preserved the town's history and honored its ancestors, reflecting John's deep respect for his roots and his commitment to leaving the world better than he found it.

John's life story is a powerful reminder that one person can indeed make a difference.

He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Martha (Lewis) Bryson; his children, John C. Bryson III (Gail), Candy Bryson, Amy Bowser (Tom), Kathy Bryson, and his daughter-in-law, Bernice Bryson; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sons, Steven Bryson and Bruce Bryson.

A celebration of his life will be held on July 6, 2026, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the Waters Clubhouse & Catering at the Bath Country Club.
