John Rezelman, age 92, of Bath passed away peacefully at home on
February, 2012. He was born in Plandome, NY, the son of Reyer and Kate (Fennema) Rezelman, both of the Netherlands.
He graduated from Ithaca High School and then from Cornell University
College of Agriculture in 1941. At Cornell he met Mary Ellen Gillett and they were married in 1942 and moved to Bath where he served as Steuben County Manager for Farm Credit Association of Olean for 38 years. He was very proud to have "traveled extensively -- in Steuben County" and knew its roads, agriculture and farmers well. He was passionate about gardening and sustainable living, and very creative at making things and working with wood. A gifted cartoonist, writer and poet, in 2010 he published a book on the history of potato farming in Steuben County, a story he very much wanted to have preserved.
He and Mary Ellen were actively involved with the Finger Lakes Trail Conference until her death in 1969, and sponsored and maintained several miles of trail in the Bath area. He then married Jean Doren of Ithaca and they continued their interest in the FLTC together. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, the Farm Bureau, participated in the Bath Area Writers Group, Red Jacket Writers in PennYan, Bath Peace and Justice, and Hornell Poet's Theatre. Mr. Rezelman was pre-deceased by his second wife, Jean in 1991. He was also predeceased by his son John (Jack) Reyer Rezelman, daughter-in-law Betsy Cogger Rezelman, and great grandson Matteo Jack Sabanegh. He will be greatly missed by his daughters Kate Rezelman, Marian Rezelman of Bath, and Martha (Ed) Thompson of Corning, and grandchildren Peter and Ellen Thompson of Corning, Nyanda (Cesar) Santos of Bethlehem, PA and Alexa (Rami) Sabanegh of Oslo, Norway. Also surviving him are great grandchildren Cecilia Sabanegh and Nandi Felix Santos, many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service in celebration of John's life on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 11 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church in Bath. Burial at a later date will be at Nondaga Cemetery, Bath.
