Kathryn L. "Kate" Short, a beacon of love and adventure, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2025, at her home surrounded by family in Bath, N.Y., after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on February 19, 1958, in Corning, N.Y., Kate's life was a tapestry of joyful moments and meaningful connections, woven with the threads of her caring nature and indomitable spirit.
Kate's journey was marked by an unwavering dedication to her loved ones. She was the cherished wife of Harold W. Short Jr., and together they built a life rich in laughter and mutual support. Kate's legacy of love is carried on by her daughters, Melinda A. (Lennie Drummond) and Jennifer M. (Curtis Janowski) who learned the essence of strength and compassion from their remarkable mother. Her light will continue to shine brightly in the lives of her grandchildren-Leif Allen, Cort Allen, Savannah VanCise (Matthew Cole), Hailey Janowski, Camden Janowski, and Ellianna Janowski-and great-grandchild Kinsleigh Janowski, each of whom she adored with every fiber of her being.
Kate's siblings, Mary Finch, Elvira Karns, Fred Finch, and Bob Finch, remember her as a guiding force, a sister who always led by example and provided a shoulder to lean on. Her fur baby, Jackson, was a cherished companion who brought additional joy and comfort to her days. Kate's lifelong best friend, Veronica "Bic" Bowen, stood by her side through every chapter of life's journey, a testament to the enduring power of true friendship.
A proud graduate of Savona Central School, Kate's thirst for knowledge was matched only by her passion for helping others. She dedicated 33 years of her life to Ira Davenport Hospital, where her colleagues became a second family. Her commitment to service extended beyond her career, as she was actively involved in her community, always striving to make a difference in the lives she touched.
Traveling, camping, and baking were among Kate's favorite pastimes, each activity infused with her signature blend of enthusiasm and skill. Her love for Walt Disney World was legendary, and she seized every opportunity to experience its magic, often surrounded by her adoring family. Kate's life was a testament to the belief that joy can be found in every moment and that the world is a canvas awaiting the brushstrokes of our dreams.
Kate's life was defined by her loving nature, her thoughtfulness, and her adventurous soul. She was a beacon of hope and a wellspring of encouragement to all who knew her. Her ability to see the beauty in every day, to face challenges with grace, and to elevate those around her was nothing short of inspirational.
