Peter D.
Langendorfer
March 10, 1955 – March 18, 2026
Memorial Gathering
Peter D. Langendorfer, USAF Sgt (ret.)
1955-2026
Bath, NY — Peter David Langendorfer, age 71, born March 10, 1955, died at his home in Bath, New York, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
Pete graduated from the Haverling Central School, where he swam and wrestled on the varsity teams. As a junior at Haverling High School, he received the Nadeau Citizenship Award and attended Boys’ State as one of the high school’s two representatives.
After graduation, Pete worked at Langendorfers’ Little Store on Route 54, for a short while before enlisting in the United States Air Force. During his 20 years of service in the military, he served in South Korea; Germany; Egypt during Desert Storm; Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, NV; Pease Air Force Base, NH; Rome Air Force Base, Rome, NY; Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, NC and Minot Air Force Base in Grand Forks, ND. In 1992, Pete retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant and returned to his hometown, Bath, where he has been a longtime engaged member of St. Mary’s Church in the St. John Vianney Catholic Parish. He served on the Parish Council and the Building and Grounds Committee, was a cross bearer for Masses, a member of the Funeral Assembly, worked on the annual yard sale, and participated in the Care and Share Food and Toy Drive and Joseph’s Hammer.
One of Pete’s most cherished activities was as an active member and leader of the Council 5147 of the Knights of Columbus beginning in 1992. His roles included Grand Knight, Treasurer. Trustee, President of the Home Association, and volunteer liaison to the Bath Veterans Administration. In 2013, Pete was inducted into the Father Guilfoil Fourth Degree Assembly 732 in Corning, after which he was a frequent member of the Fourth Degree Honor Guard. Throughout his time with the K of C, he was devoted to the care and maintenance of the Knights of Columbus and Parish properties, including the Holy Cross Cemetery.
As a committed volunteer in the Village of Bath, Pete coordinated free interdenominational Sunday suppers at St. John Vianney and other local churches. He was a member of the Village of Bath Shade Tree Committee and on the Board of Directors of the Spring Meadow Apartments. Pete was especially beloved by many longtime elderly Bath residents for his work mowing their lawns, shoveling snow, making handyman repairs, and being a friendly presence in their lives. He worked part-time performing maintenance and repairs at the Dormann Public Library.
His large family fondly remembers Pete for his wry smile, his love of quiet time on his own, his lifelong endeavors to unselfishly help those in need, his passion for gun safety and hunting, and his commitment to a life of service to others. He is dearly missed.
Pete was the beloved son of John and Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Langendorfer, both of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his seven siblings, Stephen (Jeanne), Susan deMey (Allen), Thomas (Sue), Carol Mozes, Joanne Hastrich (Michael), Charles (Kelly), and Christine Deeter (Eric), 19 nieces and nephews, and 17 grandnieces and grandnephews, and one great grandniece.
A memorial gathering is planned for Saturday, 1:00-3:00pm, April 11, 2026, in O’Malley Hall at St. Mary’s Church in Bath. All members of the community are welcome and encouraged to join the extended family members to share their memories of Pete. The Knights of Columbus will provide refreshments.
In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to donate to a charity of your choice and to emulate Pete by engaging in acts of kindness to anyone in need.
