Richard Aftuck, 77 died peacefully at Elcor Nursing Facility after a long illness with Alzheimer's disease. Richard was born January 8, 1938 in Bath, NY. He was one of five children born to Joseph and Mary (Romance) Aftuck.
Richard graduated from Bradford Central School in 1955. After spending a year at Delhi College majoring in Building Construction and participating in the cross country running team, Richard enlisted in the Army where he received his training in Military Police at Fort Benning, GA.
Through the years, Richard worked at Ingersol Rand in Painted Post, NY as a machinist, Groves Construction Co. as a Carpentry Forman, V.A. Center in Bath, NY as a construction Superintendent & Foreman, Self-Employed in remolding, Interstate Construction Co. as Superintendent of Works and Campbell Savona Central School where he primarily worked in building & grounds. Richard loved running.
During his retirement, Richard participated in as many running events as possible from the Wineglass Marathon, Pie&Glove Race, Turkey Trot, the Lanier Bridge in GA and many more.
He spent several weeks during the winter months in St. Simons, GA with his partner Marjorie Wilson and traveled to Vermont where he enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Michelle Aftuck.
Richard, a member of the Bath Country Club and enjoyed golfing.
Richard enjoyed taking beautiful photographs of outdoor scenery, gardening & landscaping, running any kind of race, helping others, volunteering in delivering meals through Meals on Wheels to families, volunteered at the LPGA in Corning, and taking photographs for VA memorial events. He was an avid runner and collector of everything.
Richard was predeceased by his parents, his sister Marian Burd and Marjorie Wilson, his partner and good friend of 30 years.
Richard is survived by his only daughter, Michelle Aftuck of Northfield, VT, his sisters Janet Elliot of Penn Yan, NY, Silvia Dempster of
Bath, NY and his brother, Edward Aftuck of Savona, NY, several nieces and nephews and Marge Wilson's extended family.
A ceremony of Richard's life will be held at a future date in the spring.
Arrangements are being held at Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath, NY.
In lieu of flowers, memorial wishes would be to sponsor, support and encourage a young student in a local community to participate in an athletic activity.
Richard enjoyed seeing young people active. He will be remembered for his kindness, gentle ways, love of nature, gardening, taking photographs, helping others and his harmonious whistle. His family appreciated very much the support and care he received at Elcor.
