Robert Allen “Bob” Houseknecht, Sr., age 82, of Topsfield, MA, passed away on September 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Bob was born on September 5, 1944, in Muncy, PA, the son of Lynn R. Houseknecht and Roxie McBride Houseknecht, and spent his life building a reputation as a kind, handy, and dependable man who could be counted on in any circumstance. He was a graduate of Haverling High School, Class of 1962, and soon after answered the call to serve his country. Bob was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving three years with honor and carrying the values of discipline, loyalty, and responsibility with him throughout the rest of his life.

Following his military service, Bob devoted himself to hard work and to the people around him. He was employed by W.T. Grant for five years, Bern Furniture for 30 years, and Fagan’s Inc. Furniture and Funeral Home for 24 years. In every position, he brought a steady hand, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to help wherever he was needed. He was widely known as the guy who could fix anything, and that reputation was well earned. Whether the task was large or small, Bob approached it with patience, skill, and practical wisdom that made life easier for those fortunate enough to know him.

Bob’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Patricia Hess Houseknecht, whose companionship and devotion were a central part of his life. He also leaves behind his son, Robert Allen Houseknecht, Jr. (Johanna) of Syracuse, NY, and his daughter, Melissa Palmer Houseknecht (Scott Lucas) of Topsfield, MA. Bob was a proud grandfather to Adam Robert Kushner (Sarah) of Highland, CA, and Kelly Maude Houseknecht (Quinn Bergman) of Niagara Falls, NY. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Abigail Claire Kushner and Elijah Robert Kushner. Bob loved his family above all things and never missed a chance to spend time with them.

He will also be deeply missed by a wide circle of family and friends who knew him not only for his generosity and reliability, but also for the warmth and enthusiasm with which he shared the things he loved. Bob had a lifelong affection for Elvis, trains, and Gettysburg, and he enjoyed sharing those interests with everyone he met. His stories and knowledge made conversation with him memorable, and his presence left people feeling welcomed and valued.

Bob gave generously of his time to his community as well. He served for 20 years as a Boy Scout leader for Troop 57 in Owego, NY, helping to guide and encourage young people through the lessons of Scouting. His dedication to that role was recognized with the Silver Beaver Award, the most prestigious honor given by a local council of Scouting America. That recognition reflected what those who knew him already understood, that Bob led by example, served with humility, and made a lasting difference in the lives of others.

Those who loved Bob will remember a man who was steady, capable, and deeply devoted to the people and causes that mattered most to him. His life was one of service, family, and enduring kindness. As Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” By that measure, Bob Houseknecht succeeded in abundance. He made life easier, brighter, and better for many, and his memory will remain a source of comfort and gratitude to all who knew and loved him.
