Sharon Stevens, 81, of Bath, New York passed away, April 20, 2024, at the Fred and Harriet Taylor Health Center, with her husband John at her side.
Sharon was born, December 1, 1942, the third of eight children, in the town of Urbana to Nelson and Lilah (Bronson) States. As a child she attended Pleasant Valley School, Hammondsport Central and graduated from Haverling High School in 1961. Sharon earned an Associates Degree in Dental Hygiene from Broome County Tech, and worked for many years for Dr. Caulder of Dansville, and Drs Schiermer and Lovejoy in Painted Post, New York. She also worked as a photo-journalist for the Corning Leader, sold Real Estate and was well known in the Hammondsport area as the co-owner and manager of the Hammondsport Hardware.
Sharon was witty, with a warm bubbly personality. She was imaginative and wrote charming childrens' stories. She loved to dress up as a storyteller for library and Historical events. She had a beautiful singing voice and was proud of her participation in her college choir when it performed at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. And later, she became a member of the Lakeview Apartments choir. Sharon was a farm girl, worked in her parent's vineyard and became a member of the Pleasant Valley Grange. Sharon was civic minded. She was a charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, led a funding drive for the purchase of a heat seeking camera for the Hammondsport Fire Department, served as a dispatcher for the Hammondsport Ambulance, and was a member of the Steuben County Historical Society.
Sharon was married to John Stevens on April 11, 1968. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, son Fred and daughter-in-law Donna (Stefenizzi) Stevens and grandchildren Estella and Jackson Stevens of Manhattan, New York. Also surviving are sisters, Margie Guerin and Suzanne States of Bath, NY and Marcella States (Larry Parshall) of Plattsburg, NY and brother, Leslie States (Bevelyn Wood) of Blountstown, Florida. And she leaved behind many loving nieces and nephews in New York State, PA, California, Colorado, Montana and Florida. Surviving are Melissa Guerin of Bath, NY, Jeanne Bilcari (Drinald) of Painted Post, NY, Sarah Hunt (Benjamin) of Pittsburg, PA, Natalie States of Blountsville, Florida and Valerie (Justin) Bailey of Florida, nephews, Laverne Guerin of Bath, NY and Benjamin States of Blountstown, Florida, sisters-in-law, Rosemary States of Bath, NY and Clara States of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Sharon also leaves behind numerous great-nieces and nephews, many cousins and dear friends. Sharon loved babies and dogs but tolerated cats. She was a good cook. Strangers were new friends to be made. She was immensely proud of her son and his family, and her husband was her rock. She leaves us bereft.
A Celebration of Life for Sharon Stevens will be held August 3rd, 2024, from 1:00-3:00 at the Bath V.F.W. Pavilion on Route 54, Bath, NY.
