Walter S. Volz, age 85, of Bath, NY died Monday, May 14, 2012 at home.
He was born April 25, 1927 in Konstanz, Germany the son of Sebastian and Elizabeth Pickel Volz.
Mr. Volz retired after 30 years as Vice President and Vineyard Manager of Dr. Konstantin Frank's Winery in Hammondsport, NY. In his retirement Walter had his own vineyard and nursery that he established.
As a wine maker he and his colleagues gathered regularly at local restaurants to sample and critique their own wines.
Mr. Volz was a member of St. Mary's Church in Bath, the B.P.O.E. 1547 in Bath, Knights of Columbus Council 5147 8 in Bath and a past member of the American Wine Society.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan (Brad) Gillespie of Rochester, NY, son, Eric (Diane) Volz of Bath, NY; six grandchildren, Gregor, Torsten and Andrea Gillespie and Kara, Marissa and Jennifer Volz, brother Charles Werner (Rosalie) Volz of Albuquerque, NM; cousins, Karin Dean of Franklin Square, NY and Manfred Pickel of Munich, Germany, sisters-in-law, Tecia Volz of Albuquerque, NM, Helen Schelling of Catskill, NY and Margrit Frank of Hammondsport, NY and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents and wife Brunhilde Frank Volz.
Friends may call on Friday May 18th from 4:00-6:00 pm at Fagan's Funeral Home in Bath with an Elks service to be held at 5:45.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday May 19th at 12:00 pm at St. Mary's Church in Bath with Reverend Pat Connor as celebrant.
Burial will be in the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
The family will provide flowers and requests memorial donations be made to St. Mary's Church in Bath or a charity of one's choice.
